Utilities & city services
Water and trash run through the city; electricity through Southern California Edison; gas through SoCalGas; and internet through the usual carriers with availability varying by tract. Set up water/trash before move-in day — the city's utility desk handles start service quickly but not retroactively. Street-sweeping schedules are enforced; learn your side of the street before your first ticket does it for you.
DMV, voting & records
California gives new residents a short window for driver's license and vehicle registration transfers — book DMV appointments early rather than walking in. Voter registration rides along with the DMV process; school enrollment will separately want proof-of-residency documents, so keep utility start-service confirmations handy.
The good stuff
Library cards at the Central Library unlock kids' programs and passes; the Community Services catalog is the seasonal rhythm of classes and camps; and beach parking annual passes pay for themselves quickly for regulars. None of it is glamorous — all of it is the difference between visiting and belonging.
